Ready. Set. Write!

Another week is over, and that means it's also time for another update of Ready.Set.Write! What's that? Well, it is a super summer writing intensive sponsored by AlisonKatyErinElodie and Jamiewhich helps us writers not to fall into complete summer laziness and actually get some writing done. We cheer each other on, strive for goals and write whatever we can while eating ice cream, swimming in the sun and simply enjoying summer.

How did I do on last week's goals?

Write two chapters .....Nope, crash burn on this one!

After spending last week with intensive editing to get a MS out the door, I let tons of regular life things slide. This week, I ended up playing catch-up on life. But I did read 5 books for reviews and discussed my WiP with my family. But writing itself? Not a word.

Goals for this week?

Blblblblblbblb....   Let's say, write 500 words. Lame? Perhaps, but school starts up again soon and there's still a fairly big list of things my kids want to do this summer. So I'm concentrating on that and keep my writing goals low.

A favorite phrase/line from my story that sums up what I wrote/revised. . .

Idea composing.

The biggest challenge I faced . . .

Catching up with the rest of life!

Something I love about my MS. . .

The possibilities. Oh, and the wonderful image my daughter put in my head about one of my characters during our discussions. I have a six foot, very solid, dark man who I lovingly deem in my conversations as the Fairy God-Bro. My daughter wants me to put a tiny pair of pink, fairy wings on his back. Now, wouldn't that be an odd sight for a burger flipper?

So what about you? I bet you got more writing done than I! Attack those words or did they attack you? Heading into some last goals before the end of the summer?

How's your writing moving along?

  2. Fairy wings are a must for the Fairy God-Bro! That would be great. It's cute you can discuss your writing with your kids. Reading and reviewing 5 books in the week is no mean feat too!

  3. Some weeks, life just has to come first. Hope you enjoy the rest of summer vacation with your kids and get a little writing in too! Love the Fairy God-Bro. That is awesome.

  4. Life just happens to push my writing aside too! But it's not a bad thing. Sounds like your daughter's a big help giving you awesome suggestions....!!

  5. T. I just read on my blog that you might be interested in reading & reviewing my book, Don't Forget to Breathe. If you're still interested could you please send me an email (cathrinaconstantine@gmail.com) or message me on FB and tell me which you prefer: PDF or ebook? And I'm in so rush. Thank You!!

  6. LOL @ Fairy God-Bro. Definitely hard to get the balance right sometimes, but kids come first! Glad you get to spend quality time with them this summer before they go back. Good luck this week! :)

  7. He he, fairy god-bro! Love it! And I don't think a goal of 500 words is lame. If it's realistic, then more power to you for recognizing your limits and not feeling bad about them. As much as we'd love to type away in imagination land all day, sometimes life just needs to be taken care of! Good luck on the writing and enjoy your time with the kids before school starts!!

  8. Sometimes you just need a week to catch up on life. Glad you could have such awesome WiP discussions with the fam! That's great! Hope you have a great week!

  9. Definitely need to put that real life stuff first. 500 words seems about perfect! Also, I totally love "idea composing", both the term and the actual process. :-) Hope you have a great week, Tonja!

  10. Sometimes life stuff just gets in the way! 500 words sounds manageable. :)

Haha, love the idea of the fairy wings. :P

  11. Spend time with your kids now. More important. Once they're in school, you'll have a lot of time to write.

  12. It sounds like your week of editing was intense, so I think that definitely excuses you for this past week. After all, life goes on! We can't let that slide either.

Anyway, I hope you manage your 500 words, but even if you don't, those summer memories with the kiddos is important too. :) And LOL that image from your daughter. It's a good one!

  13. Not too many weeks left of summer, so it's completely understandable to have to scale things back in order to focus on fun things with the kids--love that they help you with your writing!

  14. That's the constant struggle isn't it? Whenever you take a nice big block of time to plow through some writing, everything else builds up, and then it takes a nice big block of time to get all that stuff back in order. Sigh. It's a vicious cycle. I hope you have time to get that 500 words down this week in the middle of all the other busyness. :)

  16. Okay, I think you should run with your daughter's idea for your Fairy God-Bro. Sounds perfect! And I feel ya on the reduced goal. Totally makes sense to spend time with your kiddos while you can. Have a great week, Tonja!

  17. I know that feeling of catching up. Whenever I get in a good writing groove, I always need a few days to get back into the real-life blahness of doing laundry and going to the grocery store.

    Have a great week!

  18. Wow--5 books in a week? I must say, I'm impressed by that, at least! And don't go crazy worrying about the writing. Spending time w/your family and seizing the (last of the summer) days is more important.

LOVE THE FAIRY GOD BRO!! :-D

As for me, I finally got past a big hump in my latest MS. I think you know the one. ;-) I'm almost at the home stretch--my favorite part to write, and my favorite chapters are coming! Big battle scene, horrifying climax, heartwarming denouement. I don't know if I'll finish it by the end of summer (b/c of "real job" stuff), but Sept. or Oct is looking good. :-) Last in this part of the series, and a major, major goal completed for me.

  19. YES put the wings on him!!!! That is beyond awesome! Tiny pink wings on a big guy is perfect! ^_^

Finishing catching up on life. We need to do that, too, I suppose. :P The story will wait patiently for your return, plus, you need a little break after intensive edits!

  20. HA! Try the wings for your 500 words this week and give us an excerpt next time? Enjoy the time with your kids and have fun during your last weeks of summer! How does it go so fast? Have a lovely week :)

  21. I have those weeks where there are barely any words, but lots of times I come back more energized from it. My kidlet's only three, so I've yet to experience the crazy pre-school bustle. =)

  22. I feel you on getting caught up on the rest of your life! I can't believe we are getting so close to the end of summer. My son is actually excited to go back to school!

  23. I'm getting feedback from my beta readers, which is awesome - I've already been taking notes and adding stuff to make the book better. ^_^ Also been planning a sequel, which I have mixed feelings about but I'm pressing forward on anyway. Oi.

  24. School starts Aug. 31st here and I feel like there's so much left to do before then. The summer slides by so fast. I think it's better to do summery things and work on work later.
