What's Up Wednesday

Two wonderful ladies, Jaime Morrow and Erin L. Funk, sponsor this weekly meme with the sole purpose of helping us writerly folks to keep in touch with each other. You can sign up on their linky and hop around - see what the writing world is up to!

This week. . .

1) What I've been reading. . .

I kind of went on a reading frenzy, despite life's craziness (or maybe because of it?). In the YA/Adult area, I read A FOREVER KINDA LOVE by Clara Stone. It's a YA romance, being released soon, and since she's a super cool writer buddy, I couldn't wait to get my fingers on an ARC. It's sweet. Then I read the 2nd book in the book set TEN BRIDES FOR TEN HEROES. I joined the street team a while ago for one of the authors and got a good deal on them. They're cute - easy reads. And I read TORTURED SOULS by Kimber Leigh Wheaton, which was pretty good. I'm planning on looking into some other books by her as well.

Off in the MG area, there was SECRET BOOK OF MUMMIES by Scott Peters, which goes through 101 facts about mummies. Very interesting. My younger son is totally hooked. FRANKIE DUPONT AND THE MYSTERY OF ENDERBY MANOR by Julie Grasso, which was really fun.

And I'm half-way through Marissa Meyer's CINDER - a fairytale cleverly done.

2) What I've been writing. . .

Because of all the reading, you might think I haven't gotten any of this done. Ha! I'm rockin' this week!
I sat down Monday w/ the goal of 10,000 words by the end of this week. I put my fingers on the keyboard and stared at the screen. Typed two words. And stared at the screen. Basically, that was all of Monday (in continual repetition, of course.) Tuesday morning started the same way. Two hours of staring at the screen, and then, it hit! 3,500 words yesterday, and I'm hoping to blast through tons more today.

3) What is Inspiring Me. . .

Ugh! This is always my most unfavorite question! Uhhhh....okay. Got it.

At the moment, I feel like I've just stepped into a new room of life and haven't even had a chance to glimpse at it yet. (I'm going to go a little weird here, so hold on. . .) It could be a living room with chandeliers and a plate full of chocolate. It could be a bathroom with a shower in desperate need of a scrub. It could be the laundry room too (oh no! please, no!) But whatever it is, I haven't experienced it yet, and I have no idea what to expect. Bad or good, it's a new journey, and I can't wait to see what's in store. That's inspiring me.

4) What Else I've Been Up To. . .

Well, I went to an antique store last week and found an old wooden rocking chair just like my grandmother once had. The basic frame is in really good shape, but the back needs to be fixed (a hole in the weaving) and it needs a new seat. Mark it up for a winter project! (I'll have to show before and after pics)

Then we went to the Laura Ingalls Wilder house. It was nice. Over priced. Lots of older women working there, who obviously love their job. Cute. It was fine to walk through, although I think you need to be a TOTAL Laura fan to really enjoy it. But it was nice. (We weren't allowed to take pictures indoors. My daughter took one outside, but I forgot to download them from her. *kicks self in backside*)

We built electric fence and moved my cows. (Exciting, huh?)

And the kids started school.

What about you? What have you been up to? Know of anyone who can weave straw backings for chairs? What room of life are you standing in right now? Want to come and help move some cows???

  1. Wow, you did a lot of reading! Since I'm currently unsure how to proceed in my WIP, I should maybe use this time to go on a reading binge.

What room am I living in? I feel like I'm in a hallway right now, transitioning from one room to another. I'm not sure how the new room will be decorated or what exactly will be in there. Part of me is scared to open the door.

    1. Yeah, when I get stuck on a WIP, I tend to go on reading binges hoping it will help. Hallways are good places to be. At least, you life isn't stagnant.

  2. Great job on the reading and writing this week! And I think that rocking chair sounds fantastic. I love rocking chairs, and authentically old ones are just wonderful. Can't wait to see the restoration!

    1. I'm trying to decide if I want to restore it to it's original state or be creative. I'll let you know what happens.

  4. Whew! You have had one productive week! Way to burn through so many books and pen out so many words! (I'm just a wee bit jealous.) I've been puttering around with the kids school, obsessed with my nearly-completed house, and prepping for my blog tour. Nothing eats your creativity like sending out 60+ emails in a day, right?

  5. Whatever productivity pills you are taking, I'd love to have a few!!

  6. Yay, words!! ^_^
I love your inspiration this week! It really makes perfect sense. I feel like I'm a bit in a new room full of unknown magics...or piles of laundry! I haven't turned the light on yet. Lol!

Thanks for the offer to participate in cow herding. I will totally join in! ^_^

Can't wait to see what kind of progress you make the rest of the week!

  7. Your Monday-Tuesday sounds very much like my writing lately. I have been going back and forth between not being able to write a single word (or eeking out two) to bursting out a couple 1ks! Hopefully the Tuesday keeps up, and not the Monday ;) I also like the inspiration question the least, since it doesn't really change very much week-to-week, but I liked your answer! Have a great week :)

  11. I'm happy to hear you're enjoying CINDER. The Lunar Chronicles is one of those series that just keeps getting better with each book. I would love to visit Laura Ingall's house. My mom read me the books when I was young and I grew up on a steady diet of the TV show. You're doing amazing on your weekly writing goal! I hope the momentum keeps up! :)

  12. I just finished reading Scarlet, which I actually enjoyed more than Cinder. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

  13. Oh, and to answer your question on my blog, I'm in England :)

  14. I loved Cinder and Scarlet and Cress! Can't wait for Winter!
I love your what inspires me bit... although I don't get inspired by a shower that needs a scrub so much as stressed! I guess changes stress me out too. :)

  15. Reading frenzies are always fun! :) CINDER is awesome. Hope you get lots more words! ^_^

  16. I read Cinder last year to one of my classes and we loved it :-) Moving cows sounds like a fun adventure! Makes me want to watch City Slickers again.

  17. Great work with all that writing! Cinder was a fantastic book. This week I'm enjoying the fact my son is back in preschool and I'm getting into a regular writing routine. :)

  18. OMG--I loved Frankie Dupont! Julie Anne Grasso is SUCH a cool person too. She's actually helping me make my first book trailer! So that's what I've been working on this week. It's going quite well, I think.

Love your metaphor about the room. By all means, let the unknown inspire you. I hope it's the chandelier and chocolate one for you, by all means!

So you have experience re-furbishing furniture? Is there anything you DON'T do? Careful--I may ask you for tips in the future, and then you'll be sorry you ever posted this. ;-)

And you got to see Laura Ingalls Wilder's house! Oh my gooooooooooooooooooooood!

Also, if I were there with you, I would totally help you move your cows. *hugs*

  19. I'm impressed that you got a reading frenzy in annnnd got some words on the page. It seems like I can do one or the other in a single week but not both. Go you!

And I hope the new room isn't the Laundry Room. Whatever is in your future, I'm sure you will rock it. :)

    Have an amazing week!

  20. I'm jealous of your reading. I haven't had time lately to read anything although I squeezed in The Giver last week before going to see the movie. Really enjoyed it. And my goal is to get in 10K this week as well. Let's do this!
